The Qasqai nomads are found in the southwest of Iran and live in the provinces of Fars, Khuzestan and Southern Isfahan but have now settled in towns and villages, mostly in the region of Shiraz. The Qashqai peoples originated from the mountainous region of Azerbaijan, in the Caucasus, far to the north of their present southern Persian location. Early in the 16th century, the Qashqai relocated to the Fars province, their habitat over the past 400 years under the subjugation of Shah Isma’il, who wanted to create a human buffer against the Portuguese, who threatened his Persian Gulf shore.

The tribes willingness to assimilate with other ethnic groups of Kurdish, Lori and Afshar heritage has created a Confederacy or melting pot that has sustained their existence and diversity. The traditional craft of weaving carpets, kilims, bags, and other decorative items of utilitarian tribal art is a culturally important part of their heritage.

The field of the carpets have a typical red-brown ground colour, highlighted with other natural shades of blues, greens and ivory. The patterns are created from memory and often consist of a centrally placed medallions, sometimes repeated in all four corners with stylized animals and other folk symbols that are celebrated for their dynamic tribal aesthetic and also embrace superstitious and talismanic importance.
